free danish heart crochet pattern

The Scandinavian blood in me responds quite strongly to the colors and pattern of the Danish Heart. The simplicity and ingenuity of the pattern is stunning. Two ovals of contrasting colors, folded in half with strategic slits, when woven together produce a charming checkerboard heart that becomes a little basket. Brilliant! Thank you Hans Christian Andersen!

Recently, I saw in a magazine the pattern for a knit version of the Danish Heart and my own heart did several palpitations.ย  A Danish Heart in YARN?? So absolutely fabulous!! However, the pattern required sewing knit pieces together BEFORE you even got to the weaving of the heart. Sorry, but excessive piecing and joining makes me eventually hate the project that I set out so excitedly to make.

before…….and after blocking

Knowing that I could crochet a flat oval quite easily, I figured out how to incorporate the necessary slits into the pattern so that when the oval is completed WITH ONE PIECE OF YARN the piece is ready to weave. Yay! So easy!

Being a bit Norwegian myself, I too find myself drawn to these fabulous little hearts. I made quite a few of these a few X-mas’s ago but in a paper format. I love yarn so much more, and crochet even better! Thanks for sharing your pattern!

Thank you! I saw the knitted pattern…love to knit and crochet, but crochet is so much faster for an ornament like this. You did a great job. I appreciate you sharing your talent with the Ravelry community. ๐Ÿ™‚

Love these, can’t wait to try! The picture shows 3 sizes, do you have patterns for the smaller hearts?

  18. Allison Avatar
    Allison

Hi Janet, the pattern will make different sizes with three interwoven strands depending on what weight yarn and crochet hook you decide to use. The smaller the yarn and hook, the smaller the heart or vice versa. If you want to make a heart that has more interwoven strands (i.e. 5 or 7 interwoven strands instead of 3), it will naturally be bigger to accommodate the extra width. I have not worked out the math, but A Shropshire Lass on ravelry.com has worked out how to make a 5 strand heart and she lists her notes on how she figured it out. Did that answer your question? Best of luck!

For anyone who is attempting to make these, I noticed one error in the pattern that would create the ovals to be slightly off-center. In Round 6, it should be the following at the turn: (sc in next 4 sc, 2 sc in next sc), 3 times.
I’ve made one today and it turned out beautifully.

Shellie Dunn, would you mind giving the correction by typing out the whole of Round 6? I’m not sure what you mean by “at the turn” and whether your correction replaces the printed directions in both instances (before and after the sc in the next 28 stitches). Perhaps once I try them it will be obvious, but I would really appreciate your help with directions for the whole round. Thanks! I’m not Scandinavian, but have enjoyed traveling to Denmark and Norway numerous times.

Beautiful heart, but I can’t get it to come right, round 3 confuses me?!

Hi Abbi, sorry that row 3 has been confusing for you. I’ll try to explain in more detail how to make the open slits that allow you to weave the two ovals into a Danish heart.

At the beginning of row three, you chain 1 and single crochet into the same stitch you just chained from (1 stitch completed). Now, you chain 26 stitches (these 26 stitches are unattached to your work) – you have now made 27 stitches. Being careful that your 26 stitch chain is flat and not twisted, skip 26 single crochets on row 2 and single crochet in the next stitch (if you’re counting from the beginning of your row, you have your beginning ch 1/sc, 26 chain stitches and a single crochet at the 28th single crochet stitch spot on row 2. Only the first and the last stitch is attached to row 2 with the 26 stitch chain floating in the middle). Now it’s time to turn the corner by (2 single crochets in the next stitch, 1 single crochet in the next stitch) 3 times. You are halfway through row 3 (37 stitches).

Next, single crochet in the next stitch, chain 26 free-standing stitches, and re-attach the chain to row 2 with a single crochet after skipping 26 single crochets on row 2 (at this point you have made 65 stitches). Finish row 3 by (2 single crochet in the next stitch, 1 single crochet in the next stitch) 3 times and slip stitch into the very first stitch to close the row (74 total stitches for row 3).

Please let me know how it goes and if I still need to clarify portions of the pattern! Best of luck!

Sorry that my in depth instructions for row 3 still aren’t helping you with the pattern. If you can hold tight for a few more days I’ll try to post some more visual helps this coming weekend. Thanks! I have made it but find my two ovals different sizes and won’t fit together. I’m going to make another red one using a bigger hook to make it slightly bigger so it will cross over correctly.

  37. Allison Avatar

Hi Jacqui, I would say that your second oval – whichever one that might be – is truer to the way you crochet than the first. Sometimes, when you’re working on a new pattern or if you’re new to crochet, your first attempt will either be way too tight or way too loose. But, as you do the pattern the second time, you relax and the second attempt will be truer to your natural crochet rhythm. You’ll see, it will all get easier and you will find a good balance between your yarn tension and stitch technique. Can’t wait to see a picture of your finished heart!

@Abbi, Im not new to crochet so don’t feel bad, I guess this pattern would be better for me to see as visual rather than written.

I am a qualified teacher so I didn’t have much difficulty with the pattern but I did have a problem putting it together. I’ve done it now all ready to sew up. The first time I did it I found the ‘ch 26’ was too tight so I used a larger hook size just for those 26 ch and then used that hook on those sts only. It worked out much better and laid flat.

Fantastic pattern. Just made one in cream and fushia pink for Valentines day!
I did find issues were I seemed to have more stitches than needed, but I did the increases correctly around the ends and just did sc for the odd extra stitch I found I had. It turned out fine.
